Our famous Inn is named after the Earl of Fauconberg, who lived
at nearby Newburgh Priory, and was married to Oliver Cromwell's
daughter, Mary, who, after her father's death in 1658, is
believed to have brought her father's body to the Priory, and
that the body is still lying there, in a bricked-up vault.
Shandy Hall, the former home of the writer Laurence Sterne is
situated in the village of Coxwold..
The Fauconberg Arms is in the centre of the Doomsday Book
village CUCVALT. The village and estate were given to the
Fauconberg family by Henry VIII, so it is clear to see that our
Inn and village are steeped in history, which is the principal
reason why the North Yorkshire village of Coxwold is so highly
respected by visitors from all over the World.
We, at the Fauconberg Arms, are very proud indeed to be a part
of this historic setting.
Don't be deceived by the exterior appearance of the Fauconberg
Arms, because, once inside, you will immediately see that the huge beams and joists, flagstone
floors and great fireplace retain the atmosphere of the late
eighteenth century, when the inn was completely restored.
The picture at the top of your screen was taken in July, 2007,
the month which holds the proud British record of having the
wettest weather of any July, since records began. You will see
that there is a blue sky, and you may wonder whether the sun
always shines over the Fauconberg Arms. The truthful answer is
that it doesn't, although it always feels as though it does.
Come and see for yourself!
